Baseball Player Ranking Explanations

This website uses statistics and results to rank players. It does not use opinion/bias to rank players.

Leagues That Factor Into Rankings

1. MLB-Major League Baseball (1876-present)

Positions/Categories

1. Position Players

2. Catchers (also included in the position player rankings)

3. Starting Pitchers

4. Relief Pitchers

How Players Qualify to Be Ranked That Year

Position Players= 2.5 plate appearances per team game (405 in today's 162 game season)

Catchers= 2.0 plate appearances per team game (324 in today's 162 game season)

Starting Pitchers= 120 innings pitched plus starting more than 50% of the games they played in

Relief Pitchers= 40 innings pitched plus starting less than 50% of the games they played in

All-Time Player Rankings

All qualified players are statistically ranked by position every year.

The players receive a rating that is not posted on the website.

The rating for baseball players is the average rank of their 7 best years + a fraction of the average ranking for all qualifying years.

Players who have not or did not play 7 qualifying years receive a penalty to the rating for every year under 7 that they played.

Players By Nation

The rating used to rank the players is the same as the all-time rankings.

The players are listed in the rankings of the nation they were born in and not the nation that they grew up in.

Players By State

The rating used to rank the players is the same as the all-time rankings.

The players are listed in the rankings of the state they were born in and not the state that they grew up in.

Players By College

The rating used to rank the players is the same as the all-time rankings.

The Rankings are based on what the athlete did at the pro level and not what they did while playing for that college.

Any athlete who attended more than one college is only listed with the last school that they attended.
