How the Head Coach Rankings are Determined

The coaches are ranked by the criteria listed below in the order that they are listed

1. The coach's highest finish

2. The coach's total number of first place finishes

3. The coach's total number of second place finishes

4. The coach's total number of combined third and fourth place finishes

5. The coach's total number of seasons that they competed in the leagues listed above

6. The coach's average rank in all of the seasons they competed in

College Coaches That Factor Into Rankings

Not all divisions are factored equally

1. Head Coaches from All NCAA Division 1 Top 4 ranked colleges (1900-1935)

2. Head Coaches from All NCAA Division 1 Top 50 ranked colleges (1936-Present)

3. Head Coaches from All NCAA Division 1-AA Playoff Teams (1978-Present)

4. Head Coaches from All NCAA Division 2 Playoff Teams (1973-Present)

5. Head Coaches from All NCAA Division 3 Playoff Teams (1973-Present)

6. Head Coaches from All NAIA Division 1 Playoff Teams (1956-Present)

7. Head Coaches from All NAIA Division 2 Playoff Teams (1970-1996)

If a College Coach has never finished in the Top 50 of Division 1 or made the playoffs in one of the other divisions then they are not ranked

College Coaches By College

The rating used to rank the colleges is the same as the all-time rankings but only uses results from the coach's tenure with that school

Rankings are only done for the following conferences: ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, & SEC

College Coaches By Decade

The rating used to rank the colleges is the same as the all-time rankings but only uses results from the seasons of that decade

College Coaches By Division

The rating used to rank the colleges is the same as the all-time rankings but only uses results from the seasons in that division

Pro Coaches That Factor Into Rankings

Not all leagues are factored equally

1. Head Coaches of AAFC-All America Football Conference Teams (1946-1949)

2. Head Coaches of AFL-American Football League Teams (1960-1969)

3. Head Coaches of NFL-National Football League Teams (1920-present)

Pro Coaches By Decade

The rating used to rank the pro coaches is the same as the all-time rankings but only uses results from the seasons of that decade

Pro Coaches By Franchise

The rating used to rank the pro coaches is the same as the all-time rankings but only uses results from the coach's tenure with that franchise

Pro Coaches By League

The rating used to rank the pro coaches is the same as the all-time rankings but only uses results from the seasons in that league
